It was 1917 when West End Drug Company opened its doors in Bar Harbor. Sweethearts shared sodas at the fountain. It was a simpler, slower paced time, when the drugstore was where you could go for ice cream, medicine and counsel; where the pharmacist knew you by name. Today, things haven’t changed much at West End Drug. It’s still run by the same family and coffee is still just twenty cents. Stop in and say hello to the friendly third-generation pharmacist filling prescriptions. West End Drug Company, over 95 years of doing business the old-fashioned way yet recently recognized as one of the 50 most innovative pharmacies in America…and probably the only one with a soda fountain.

Michael Gilfillan, RPh, Head Pharmacist & Owner
Michael Gilfillan, RPh, is the third generation pharmacist and owner of West End Drug. He started working on the soda fountain at an early age and worked up to taking care of the front end of the pharmacy until going to college.
Michael graduated from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1980. Following his graduation Michael has consulted in nursing homes and in other areas of specialization at West End Drug such as wellness programs that help people live healthier with less reliance on medications and customized prescription compounding that helps individual patients better manage hormone-related symptoms and other medical conditions.
During the 1990s Michael fine-tuned his practice of the art of pharmacy compounding. Michael is expertly skilled in combining old and modern compounding methods and techniques to create new and innovative drug delivery methods tailored to meet unique individual patient needs.
In 1996 Michael was honored for his achievements in advancing the practice of pharmacy by being chosen to receive the Dupont Pharma Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award. At about this same time Michael also spearheaded West End Drug’s participation in Project Impact. West End Drug was one of just 32 pharmacies nationwide involved in an initiative to reduce patients’ cholesterol levels to target goals through enhanced pharmacist-physician teamwork.
Michael has gone on to assume management responsibility for West End Drug and its ownership in 2008. From Michael’s start at the soda fountain to his achieving recognition as a top innovator in the practice of pharmacy, one thing has remained constant: his commitment to the customers and patients that West End Drug has had the privilege to serve for three generations.
